Ferber was working beautifully for nighttime sleep. On nights three and four Nate went down for bedtime without a peep and slept for very long stretches (on night four he slept from 7:10 pm - 4:40 am - AMAZING). We even made it through two nights of fireworks! So of course, on night five our progress gets a big kick in the face when he wakes up in the middle of the night with a fever. He had a mild fever in the middle of the day and took fifteen minutes to get to sleep at 7pm. So when he woke up around 2am, I was anxious to see how he was doing. The poor thing was burning up. Well there goes crying it out for the rest of the night/morning.
I took him to the pediatrician today and it turns out that he has some painful blisters in the back of his throat caused by the coxsackie virus. Please note how the virus got its name. Lovely. The doc mentioned that it's extremely common right now with kids being in swimming pools together. She said it's transmitted from bodily fluids, but I assumed she was talking about saliva on toys, not feces. Gross. It's generally mild and just has to run its course. So he'll be enjoying lots of cold water, ibuprofen and cool clothes on the forehead today. Poor baby. In the meantime I have no idea how we are going to progress or even maintain our progress achieved through Ferber. According to the doctor we'll probably have to just start retraining when he's all better. My fingers and toes are crossed that it will go easier than last time and we won't be starting from square one.
