Sesame Street Dog People?!

We try to adhere to the AAP guidelines for television watching - which is zero tv for babies under two. This is often difficult, but we do our best.  My dad would be quick to point out that that must be what is wrong with me - all that tv watching when I was little. Don't get me wrong, I don't think watching television will ruin anyone, but every parent has their "thing." While some parents might be inflexible about bedtimes, eating all the veggies or shaving all body hair. My thing is the television. I do make a regular five minute exception for nail cutting. Have you tried to cut an - almost - toddler's nails when he didn't want you to? So I usually put on Zooboomafoo (an old kids animal show that I found On Demand) since Nate loves animals. That buys me 30-60 seconds of non-squirming manicure time.

But Nate has been sick and so grumpy. And we're in the middle of a heat wave, so we can't really take a nice long walk. We've had to cancel all of our play dates and we can only play with the same toys and read the same books so many times. So yesterday, I caved and broke my own rule and turned on Sesame Street. Nate LOVED it. He pointed at the screen excitedly, smiling and babbling. Especially when Big Bird came on. And it's been ages since I watched Sesame Street, so it was kind of fun seeing the old characters again. Maria looks good, doesn't she? Hold old is that woman anyway? And then they cut to the part of the show designed for the pill popping preschoolers (or so I can only imagine)....THE DOG PEOPLE. What the hell is going on? Have you seen them? They're like those William Wegman photos come to life only way creepier. And that voice over! You have to check out the FREAKY DOG PEOPLE here:

How confusing must that be to a little baby? "Nathaniel, that's a dog. DOG. With human hands. Can you say human hands? Fixing a car..." Am I alone here?

I completely understand where you're coming from with the dogs. It is odd, isn't it? I don't understand them. Is it supposed to be funny? I just think they're boring and slightly creepy. It could be worse, could be a human with paws?

Haha. Yes, I think that would be worse!
