Caroline is TWO!

Dear Sweet Caroline,

It seems like you have always been part of our family, yet I can't believe the time has passed so fast and you are two years old already!

18 months

Let's see...when we are out and about, the thing that people comment most on is your verbal skills. You are quite the talker! You've been speaking in complete sentences since you were 17 or 18 months, and obviously as you get older your speech gets more complex. You sing many songs, including the ABCs and can chatter to yourself for long periods of time while you play with little figures or in your crib. You make me laugh all the time. The other day Nate was playing outside with the house and accidentally sprayed you through the window. You were very disturbed, saying, "My Nate just watered me! And I'm not a plant!"

19 months

You seek adventure and are quite capable. At the park, I try to say, "go ahead, I'll spot you" instead of "that's for older kids." I want to protect you, but I know that giving you freedom to explore and make mistakes is the best thing I can do. You surprised me by easily scaling a new ladder the other day at the playground. In retrospect, I have no idea why I was surprised.

20 months

You seem to make friends easily when we're at the park or one of your brother's ball games. You happily introduce yourself - "I'm Caroline Jane!" - when prompted.

21 months

As far as milestones are concerned, you know all of your colors and shapes and can count to 15, I think. You know a lot of numbers and letters by sight, but that is definitely still a work in progress.

While you are very sweet by nature, you're also very strong willed. (Ahem, no idea where that comes from.)  I try to pick my battles and give you choices as much as possible. But sometimes we have to deal with the fallout of your very intense reactions when things don't go your way.

22 months

You're very particular about who and how you are to be touched. All hygiene matters are best handled by dad, and only recently have I been getting the green light to put your hair up in a pony or use a clip to keep it out of your face. The doctor's office was downright traumatizing, since you didn't want strangers measuring you or touching you in anyway. I think it will be quite some time before we attempt a trip to the hair salon or dentist office.

You definitely like routines, and often take some time to warm up to new things. That said, you also love going to new places and seeing new things. You would definitely prefer to be out, then at home, which is fine by me!

We've been doing mommy and me classes at a local kids gym for awhile and I love seeing your skills and strength progress. You really enjoy the balance beam and are getting quite good at swinging on the bars. You were brave enough to play on the parachute for the first time a couple of weeks ago and had an absolute blast.

23 months

One of your favorite things in the world is dancing. Diaper clad or in a princess skirt is always the outfit of choice. "Music" is actually one of the few words you say a bit funny. It sounds like "Mukis" when you say it. You especially love "Classic Mukis" and pop. Kashup = washcloth and keepup equaled pickup for a long time, but I think you have just started saying that last one correctly.

Speaking of your loves, I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much you adore your brother and father. When they are at work or school you miss them and talk about how "cute and sweet and beautiful" they are. They make you laugh and you love showering them with affection.

2 years!

You're very in tune with emotions. When someone is mad or happy, you definitely notice. And if someone is sad (particularly your brother), you want to make them feel better. You're a caring soul.

I love your joy, your sense of humor and the fact that you are a tough cookie. I really enjoy knowing that if someone tries to take advantage of you, you will let them know that you are displeased. Sometimes that means saying, "don't push me," other times that means holding onto something tighter so it isn't stolen away, and of course sometimes there are tears. You certainly aren't a pushover, kiddo.

Now

Watching my baby grow is so bittersweet. I'm not in any hurry to push you to "the next thing" but nothing is more exciting than watching you conquer something new.

I love you more than tongue can tell, my sweet girl.

~ Mama
